This is a music question for anyone with knowledge of chord structure.

In the chord sequence Ab-Db-Eb-Bb (in the key of Ab), is it possible in JS to chose a Bb chord on the high-side of Eb rather than the low-side?  Bb is the note I want, but it's in the wrong key. Perhaps there is not a Bb chord that is higher in JS.

I've tried other keys in JS, but I have not found a higher instance of Bb so far.

Please forgive my ignorance of chord structure. I compose by ear alone.

Listen to the final measure in each bar below...

1. Bb is too low:

2. Bb is correct:

3. Bb is too low:

icystorm ,on the low end note it sounds like there is a problem with the note!-----its sounds like it is a little flat,or the tone is out.i think that the key would sound good if the problem with the note is fixed,i can here it in your third sample.

Hi Joeseph,

I'm no music major (LOL) but heres my 2 cents. When U say "high side", Do U mean same notes played higher in the scale or do U mean the key notes are not correct? If U mean higher on the scale, then I think u are limited to what JS sound files give U. If the instrument u selected is not playing the chord in the higher range You may be able to find a differant instrument that might play it higher..  If you mean the key notes sound wrong or off, maybe u might need to use a Bbm instead of Bb. In any case, There is a program called Melodyne which can fix either of thos issues, but it aint cheap. It cost a few benjimans.

Thanks, Ant and Robert. I think I finally resolved the issue by changing instrumentation.

Its called an octave. So its in the proper key, but an octave too low.

You wanted the Bb to sound higher than the Eb.

And indeed, this depends on the instrumentation.

These have a Bb that sound higher than Eb:
America
Mando Up
1/2 Step 1 and 2
Bowleg 2

And then there's some with lower bass but higher high notes, like Back and Forth, Gallop 1 and 2, etc.

It makes sense tho, a Bb is usually played in 1st position and Eb in 6th, which ofcourse sounds higher.
The exceptions are those with alternative voicings (ie. Back and Forth: Bb 688766 - Ebxx1343) or with the guitar tuned a 1/2 step down (Bowleg, 1/2 Step, etc). So i suggest you also try raising your song half a step (A - D - E - B) coz then most B's will sound higher than the E Wink

Sometimes if you change the tempo, the JS tracks will have a higher note recorded (aka an octave higher) for some reason, so try messing around w/ the tempo and see if it fixes it for you
