I'm always on this site, about to pick which forum to dive into, and I always stare at "Music Theory" for a second. The reason? I don't understand what it is! I've had it explained to me from a music instructor (no help - he used crazy examples that made no sense whatsoever), my mother (no help - she just rambles on and on and on about what she thinks she knows), and a friend (no help - after everything he said that seemed to make sense, he told me he was just kidding and had no idea). So, I have a simple question: what is music theory? I need a simple answer. Maybe then I can post in this forum

Music theory is the theory behind music, duh So what is the theory behind music? Well thats a question not easily answered. Its like asking a painter how he paints. He can tell you what colors, brushes, material and techniques he uses, but that still only explains half of it. Same goes for music theory. I can explain to you why C, F and G go well together or how to use alternate picking on a guitar, but that would never make you a musician. What this theory is trying to explain is what the rules are to music, and also how you can break these rules, or at least bend em. Get it?

thanks! that makes more sense! I already know about why certain notes fit together and blah, blah, blah. But other than that, that's all I knew. lol - I've said this to Ant I believe, but I always make myself look stupid, don't I??? Thanks again!

Mes, I've been away for a while and now catching up, with the little time I have spare. Check out my youtube videos starting from lesson 1 to see if they help. They're a bit boring but take a peak anyway: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBBm1OTwm0s Your other replies were great. Tony
