instead of studying for my finals which are coming up next week I decided to create a song using JS!

I wanted this song to have a bit of a grungy rock feel- reminiscent of bands like Nickelback.  I also wanted the song to tell a message.  Hopefully I accomplished that!

Hey it seems everytime I use Adobe Audition for mixing, the vocal track always ends up behind the instrumental track.  Can anyone recommend a mixing program that doesn't do this?

Hi Kenton,

Hey it seems everytime I use Adobe Audition for mixing, the vocal track always ends up behind the instrumental track.  Can anyone recommend a mixing program that doesn't do this?

It's not really the program you use but how you use it. I have never used Adobe Audition but, I assume that it does have certin capabilities such as EQ, Compressors, limitors, and reverb. The most important of these would be the EQ. I know you may be thinking... thats just nuts but, in my opinion EQ is the most important effect than can effect the way a vocal sits in the mix. Specifically "Notch EQ". I can not teach you every espect but, I will give some basics. I would recommend doing a search to get more info. With basic sound theory... it is known that two exact frquencies will cancel each other out. One way to get a vocal to sit better in a mix is to use a notch EQ on all tracks except the vocal track to cut out frequencies that sit in the range of the vacal track. The notch EQ will help keep frequencies from being cancelled out. Some people will try to tell you to just raise the volume on the vocal track but really all that does is just make the vocal sound like its over powering the music.

Hope this helps.

What i'm learning about vocal mix is that compression and eq are important. What i've also started doing from time to time is adding just a hint of chorus. what this can do is make it pop to the front but still have it sit in the right spot. It is not something that happens right away, infact i'm still experimenting myself. If your looking for another program thats free you can try audacity, some of the people here use it or if you want to pay i recommend Mixcraft 5. You can talk to Ant about that. Good luck bro.

Hey thanks for the advice!  I'll look into the EQ settings and see.  If I can't figure it out, maybe I will try Audacity again.  I tried it before and it wasn't too bad, I just couldn't figure out how to add reverb or other effects with it, but that was  a few years ago and it looks like it's improved since

Hi Kenton... Great song man... I love the lyrics and the kickin JS mix. Vocals are great, though I felt you got more confident with the vocals after the fist chorus... I use audacity for everythng I do even after I create something in another program such a mixcraft or cakewalk... Audaqcity is great editing, simple and does have a large range of effects available as plug-ins on the net... If you need any advice on anything, just holla, we're are all here to healp and learn. Cheers on the great song mate. Loved the clip as well.  Cool Wink Grin

hey thanks for the compliment and the advice!  I'll definitely give Audacity another go then.  I've listened to a few of yours and they all sound pro so I'll be giving it a shot for sure on my next endeavour

Believe it or not but just a few days ago I stumbled upon the piece of video loop with the road heading to the light thingy while I was preparing yesterdays Xmas celebration in our church and needed 1 more background loop to add a finishing touch. When I saw that video loop it definitely didn't have that great music and lyrics attached to it. I had no use for the video loop since it had no xmas value for me, but I see that you found a very good use for it.  Grin

I enjoyed it very much!   Cheesy

Keep rolling like this.   Grin
